HEXANA is proud to have joined COGEN as a new member from 1 April of 2025. This partnership marks an important step in strengthening Europe’s transition to low-carbon, efficient, and resilient heat and power solutions.
HEXANA, an innovative start-up and winner of the FRANCE2030 program, is a spin-off of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The company is at the forefront of developing advanced modular reactors (AMR) that can operate in cogeneration mode, efficiently producing both power and high temperature heat (up to 500 degrees). The sodium-cooled modular fast neutron reactors are coupled with an integrated thermal storage system, offering a flexible and sustainable energy platform tailored to the needs of energy-intensive industries.
COGEN Europe, the European Association for the Promotion of Cogeneration, is the cross-sectoral voice of Europe’s cogeneration industry. It aims to work with EU institutions and stakeholders to shape better policies and eliminate administrative, regulatory and market barriers to the wider use of cogeneration in Europe.
“We are pleased to join COGEN as part of our commitment to advancing innovative, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions. At HEXANA, we see cogeneration as a key enabler of Europe’s clean energy transition—particularly for industries requiring high-temperature heat. Since heat is inherently difficult to transport, localized production is essential. In this context, CHP SMRs offer an opportunity to replace fossil fuels with clean, reliable, and local alternatives. We look forward to contributing to COGEN’s work and encouraging other nuclear and low-carbon stakeholders to join this important initiative.”
— Sylvain NIZOU, CEO of HEXANA
“We are delighted to have HEXANA join COGEN Europe at such a critical time in Europe’s energy transition. We look forward to working closely with HEXANA to advance cogeneration, strengthen grid flexibility, and accelerate industrial decarbonization, contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Europe.”
— Hans KORTEWEG, Managing Director of COGEN Europe
As a member of COGEN Europe, HEXANA brings valuable expertise in high-temperature heat and carbon-free electricity production, offering solutions that support industrial decarbonization while ensuring energy security. The company’s technology also enhances grid stability and facilitates the integration of renewable energy by storing surplus energy as high-temperature heat, which can be converted back into electricity when needed, strengthening the resilience of the power system.
Through its initiative, HEXANA also aims to contribute alongside its partners to the closure of the nuclear fuel cycle by fueling its reactors with reprocessed spent fuel. This circular energy and sustainable nuclear approach that could be achieved with a fleet of large fast breeder reactors, reduces waste volume and longevity while decreasing Europe’s dependence on imported enriched uranium, ensuring sufficient EU resources for thousands of years.
