HEXANA designs an integrated energy system combining modular sodium-cooled fast reactors and thermal energy storage.

HEXANA is a cutting-edge start-up spun-off from the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA). It stems from the synergy between two objectives:

  • Cutting-down CO2 emissions in the most carbon-intensive industrial sectors.
  • Providing a safe, reliable, and credible Gen IV nuclear technology.

This strategy enables HEXANA to address the urgent need to accelerate the energy transition by supplying industrial customers with a sustainable, low-carbon, and yet firm energy source.

Meeting the needs of hard-to-abate industries in crucial sectors

Heavy industry and air and sea transport have specific energy requirements: safety, dispatchability and scalability.

HEXANA meets these demands by offering safe, low-carbon, and firm combined high-temperature heat and power at the right scale, to meet at the right time the needs of most energy-intensive industries.

Grid stability and energy storage: the challenge of balancing a transforming power grid

HEXANA’s technology is not limited to the production of ultra-low-carbon electricity. It also provides customers with a unique ability to store heat at high temperature for later use, whether as thermal energy or power.

This feature allows smooth energy delivery. Dealing with load fluctuation with neither fossil-fuel backup nor reactor load-following is a game-changer.

Curtailing its delivery during low-price times by storing production and discharging, whether to capture peak price or avoid scarcity events, ensure HEXANA meets the highest level of return-on-investment possible. Furthermore, HEXANA provides the grid with competitive ancillary services as balancing – crucial to foster the transition toward sustainable energy.

Upcycling spent nuclear fuel to preserve natural resources

By reprocessing spent nuclear fuel and depleted uranium into the MOX fuel its reactors consume, HEXANA contributes to the closing of the fuel cycle, reducing reliance on imported uranium and other strategic resources. This approach also supports the development of synthetic “e-fuels”, promoting a circular carbon economy and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Curbing Europe's energy dependence

HEXANA offers local, dispatchable and cost-competitive heat and power, strengthening Europe’s energy independence in the face of geopolitical crises. Hence, HEXANA contributes simultaneously to a low-carbon reindustrialization and to European businesses’ competitivity.

HEXANA is thus a strategic linchpin in achieving the European Union’s Net Zero targets, far beyond electricity generation.

HEXANA is the credible and feasible solution for phasing out fossil fuels while meeting the climate, energy and industrial challenges of the 2030s.
